Who is Eligible for a Child Disability Care Grant?
You can apply for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant if you meet all the points below:
- You must be the child’s biological parent, main caregiver, or a foster parent with a valid court order.
- You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee.
- You must live in South Africa at the time of application.
- Your annual income must be R223,200 or less if you are single.
- Your combined annual income must be R446,400 or less if you are married.
- The income limit does not apply to foster parents.
- The child must be under 18 years of age.
- The child must have a South African ID, birth certificate, or legal proof of staying in South Africa.
- The child must not live in a state institution or receive full-time state care.
- A state medical officer must assess the child and confirm a severe disability.
Required Documents
- ID or parent, or caregiver.
- Child’s birth certificate.
- A valid, attested medical report of the child to prove the disability.
- Marital status proof.
- For Income proof, you can submit the following documents:
- Salary slip
- Pension slip
- Bank statement for the last 3 months
- If you are not the biological parent, you must submit proof of caregiving. You can provide an affidavit or a report from a social worker. You may also get a letter from a police official, school principal, or the child’s biological parent.
- If you are unemployed, you must show proof of this status. You can submit a UIF record or a discharge letter from your last employer. This helps SASSA confirm your financial situation.
If you don’t have an ID, then you need to sign the SASSA Affidavit form:
- Get the standard SASSA affidavit form from a SASSA office or police station.
- Fill in your full name, age, and home address.
- Write why you do not have an ID or birth certificate.
- Sign the affidavit before a Commissioner of Oaths.
- The Commissioner must not work for SASSA.
- Bring a sworn statement from a trusted person.
- This can be a councillor, teacher, imam, or social worker.
- SASSA staff will take your fingerprints at the office.
- They will send you to Home Affairs.
- Apply for an ID or birth certificate there.
- Take any supporting documents you have.
- If you do not apply, SASSA can stop your grant.
How to Apply for a Care Dependency Grant?
You must apply for the Care Dependency Grant in person. SASSA does not accept online applications for this grant.
First, visit your nearest SASSA office. Go during working hours. Take the child with you if possible. Carry all required documents. Bring original documents and clear copies.
At the office, ask for the Care Dependency Grant application form. A SASSA officer will give you the form. You can ask the officer for help if you do not understand any part. Fill in all details correctly. Do not leave any section blank.
Attach all required documents to the form. These include your ID, the child’s birth certificate, medical report, and income proof. If you are not the biological parent, attach the affidavit or caregiving proof. If you are unemployed, attach UIF proof or a discharge letter.
Submit the completed form to the SASSA officer. The officer will check your documents. They may ask questions to confirm details. They will also arrange a medical assessment if needed.
After submission, SASSA will give you a receipt. Keep this receipt safe. It is proof that you applied.
SASSA will review your application. This process can take up to three months. If approved, SASSA will pay you from the application date. If rejected, SASSA will explain the reason. You can appeal if you disagree with the decision.
