Why Has SASSA Declined My SRD Grant Application?
Your SRD grant application was rejected, and you must be wondering why SASSA has declined your SRD grant application, right? The answer is not so simple. Various reasons can be a cause of SRD grant rejection. However, you came to my website, so I have something helpful for you regarding this issue.
Getting a SASSA status check result of declined should not be a concern to worry. Although this felt like panic or anxiety but this is not the end of the world. Bear with me, I have something useful for you to get rid of this situation.
What is a SASSA Status Declined?
A declined status simply means:
“The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has disapproved your grant application.”
So this is the matter, and now you need to check why this happened. And the reason should be attached to your SASSA status result. If you haven’t checked the reason, then do it right now.
Check out why your application is marked as declined. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za web portal, enter your ID and phone number, and check your status once again. Now, this time, you need to check the reason as well. The most common reasons are:
- Status declined due to identity verification failure
- Alternate income source identified
- Means income source identified
- Bank balance maintained (more than R2000 per month).
So these are some of the most popular reasons that can decline your application. I have explained all the SASSA status result meanings in complete detail. So you can check them and continue from here after knowing about them.
How to Solve a Declined SRD Status?
The only solution to solve the declining SRD status is to lodge an appeal to the Department of Home Affairs (DSD). If your status is failed due to identity verification, then you need to contact with Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and solve your identity-related issues.
To lodge the SASSA appeal, you can check my detailed guide on how to appeal for the SRD grant. However, here is a quick guide on how you can appeal for your grant application.

- Find out your declined status reason and open the SASSA SRD grant web portal srd.sassa.gov.za.
- Now look for the “Appeal” section that is located at the bottom of the homepage.
- Once you visit the appeal page, you will see the heading “HOW DO I EXERCISE MY RIGHT TO APPEAL THE COVID-19 SRD?” on that page. This is your page where you need to appeal.
- Click on the “click here to lodge an appeal or check appeal status” button.
- Here you need to enter your South African ID number and phone number.
- Click on the “Send PIN” button and receive an OTP on your phone number. Verify your OTP and proceed to the appeal application process.
- Fill out the appeal application form and submit it.
How to Check Appeal Application Status?
Once you lodge the appeal, you need to keep checking your appeal application status on the official portal. Here are the steps to take:
- Go to the SASSA appeal for reconsideration page.
- Click on the “Check appeal status” button.
- Enter your phone number and South African ID number.
- Check your appeal for reconsideration status.
What If the SRD Appeal is Declined?
The SRD appeal is your last chance to fix a declined application. However, if SASSA also rejects your appeal, you cannot submit another one.
In this situation, you can take a different step. You can speak with a lawyer and open a case if you believe the final decision is unfair. But make sure you qualify for the SRD grant before you start any legal action.
Please read the complete rules about SRD grant eligibility criteria before you take any legal steps.
What is SASSA Status Pending?
Once you submit your SRD grant application online, you will see your SASSA status as “Status Pending”. This is a very common status, and it is normal as well. This is the phase when SASSA is checking your grant application.
During this time, you can not do anything to speed up this process. All you need to do is wait and watch.
What is SASSA Status Failed Due to Identity Verification?
SASSA status failed is another decline for your SRD grant application. However, this decline is not due to ineligibility but linked to your identity-related matters.
For instance, you have applied, and soon after, your identity card expired. In this case, you will get an identity verification failed status. This is one of the many reasons that can cause this identity failure status.
How Does the SASSA Grant Application Verification System Work?
The SASSA verification system checks your details step by step. I tested this process many times, and I noticed that SASSA follows a strict method before it approves any SRD grant. This helps them make sure every applicant is real and eligible.
First, SASSA checks your ID number with the Department of Home Affairs. This confirms that your ID is valid, active, and correct. If there is any mismatch, the system marks your status as “identity verification failed.” I once saw this happen when a friend had an expired ID, so the system blocked his application right away.
After this step, SASSA checks your income. The system links with banks and other government databases to see if you receive money every month. If the system finds more than R624 per month, it marks your status as declined. This part is fully automatic, and you cannot control it.
Moreover, the system also checks if you receive any other grants or UIF payments. If it finds another active benefit, it rejects your SRD grant.
